Michael Cant Awarded Honorary Fellowship

Michael Cant, CEO of Larch Consulting, is today awarded an Honorary Fellowship at Glyndwr University in recognition of his contribution to the University (where he recently completed a term as Chair of the Board of Governors) and of his wider contribution to field of facilities and infrastructure strategy.

Mike’s relationship with the University began when it was still North East Wales Institute of Higher Education.  He was engaged as strategic and Executive Board advisor to develop the forward plan for the Institute Board and Governors and including assessing corporate structure, governance, and building and campus operations as the organisation made its journey to University status.  His work to create a vision that interwove place, purpose and people; brand, buildings and belonging quickly saw him invited onto the Board.

The Intelligent Client

What do these words really mean? On numerous occasions over the past ten years or so the term has turned up for debate. Larch Consulting's Mike Cant gives us his thoughts.

intelligent-client-image-1We talk about how important it is to have an intelligent client in the Estates and FM sector; how it is vital if infrastructure services are to be delivered to standard, to best value and to the client’s expectations; how it is a must-have if a contractor is to deliver the promise. We say it makes a difference.

At Larch, we find the concept of an intelligent client more than a little demeaning – who would wish to suggest their client was not intelligent? But it’s a commonly discussed term in publications, so what is it really trying to say?

Intelligence is defined as having ‘intellectual power’. But perhaps we’re reaching for a slightly different idea – a client that can express their strategy, their service requirements, and their preferences in an intelligible way? Intelligibility could be the vital connection between what we are trying to say about the role of an intelligent client and the way this attribute can improve the quality and standard of FM in practice. Or perhaps it’s articulacy: so often clients know what they want but they are struggling to express it in the forms we require in facilities management.

Following two independent processes, Mercury Alliance have been successfully awarded a place on the national frameworks to provide both grounds maintenance and cleaning services to schools and public buildings across multiple counties under the Pro5/ Eastern Shires Purchasing Organisation (ESPO) framework agreement.

These awards mean that our services have met the stringent quality standards required by those public sector organisations who are able to procure services via this route.

Mercury Alliance secures £28m FM contract with Somerset County Council

Mercury Alliance has secured a contract to provide soft FM services to Somerset County Council for up to seven years in a deal worth around £28m. The contract for combined catering and cleaning services was won by Mercury following an eight-way competitive tender.
